After breakfast at your desert camp, begin your final day of the journey from Merzouga to Fes, crossing some of Morocco’s most contrasting and spectacular landscapes. The journey takes you from the golden dunes of the Sahara through palm-filled oases, dramatic valleys, mountain landscapes, and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas before reaching the historic city of Fes.
Your journey begins with a final opportunity to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Sahara. After leaving the desert camp, you return to Merzouga by camel or 4×4, depending on your chosen desert experience.
From Merzouga, continue towards Rissani, an important town in the Tafilalet region and one of the historic gateways to the Sahara. The area is known for its traditional souk, dates, local crafts, and ancient ksour. If the local market is taking place, you may have the opportunity to experience the lively atmosphere of a traditional Moroccan market.
Continue towards Erfoud, famous for its fossil workshops and the remarkable geological history of the region. The surrounding area was once covered by an ancient sea, and local craftsmen have turned fossils and stone into beautiful decorative pieces. A visit to a traditional fossil workshop can be arranged for those interested.
The road then continues towards the spectacular Ziz Valley, where the scenery gradually changes from the dry desert landscape to an enormous oasis of date palms surrounded by dramatic rocky cliffs. Stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the valley to admire the contrast between the green palm groves, traditional villages, and rugged mountains. The Ziz Valley is one of the most impressive landscapes along this route.
Continue north towards Midelt, a mountain town situated between the High Atlas and Middle Atlas ranges. Midelt is well known for its apple production and is an ideal place to stop for lunch and relax before continuing the journey. From here, the landscape begins to change dramatically as you enter the cooler mountain regions of Morocco.
After lunch, continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains, crossing high mountain landscapes and remote Berber villages. The road gradually takes you from the arid scenery of the Sahara into greener landscapes covered with cedar trees.
One of the highlights of the afternoon is the Cedar Forest near Azrou, one of the most beautiful natural areas of the Middle Atlas. The forest is home to wild Barbary macaques, which can sometimes be seen around the trees and roadside areas. The surrounding landscape offers a completely different perspective of Morocco, with tall cedar trees, mountain air, and a peaceful atmosphere.
Continue towards Ifrane, a charming mountain town famous for its European-inspired architecture, clean streets, gardens, and cool climate. Often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco,” Ifrane feels very different from the desert regions you have travelled through earlier in the journey. Take some time to explore the town and enjoy a final coffee or refreshment before continuing towards Fes.
From Ifrane, descend towards Fes, one of Morocco’s most historic and culturally important cities. As you approach the city, the landscape gradually changes once again, marking the end of your journey from the Sahara to northern Morocco.
Upon arrival in Fes, you will be dropped off at your riad, hotel, or preferred location, bringing your Morocco desert adventure to an end.
This final journey is much more than a transfer. It is a remarkable transition through Morocco’s diverse landscapes — from the golden dunes of Merzouga and the palm-filled Ziz Valley to the mountains and cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, finishing in the historic cultural atmosphere of Fes.
